Improving technology uptake for whole-crop cereal silage production AgEcon
Stevens, David R.; Casey, M.J.; Brown, C.D.; Platfoot, G.J..
Rapid dairy industry expansion in the South Island of New Zealand during the 1990’s increased demand for agistment and supplementary feed. Consultants and retailers recognised the ability of whole-crop cereal silage to provide the extra feed required. The local arable industry had declined, creating the opportunity to develop commercial technical support packages from establishment to harvesting for sheep and dairy farmers growing whole-crop cereal silage. Industry technical support packages were supported by ‘just in time’ local research into the growing, making and feeding of whole-crop cereal silage. The package, based on several methods of payment, captured the benefits of new Triticale cultivars. Further investigation into the uptake of whole-crop...

Improving the efficiency of rock phosphate on high pH soils: Results from participatory research in India Organic Eprints
Andres, Christian; Mandloi, Lokendra S.; Verma, Rajeev; Gomez, Sara; Nyffenegger, Mirjam R.; Locher, Michael; Patel, Dharmendra; Forster, Dionys; Bhullar, Gurbir S.; Studer, Christoph.
High soil pH levels may limit the availability of phosphorous (P) to crops. In organic farming, the use of synthetic P fertilizers is not allowed. Application of rock phosphate (RP) to crops is one of the alternatives for organic production. However, RP application shows little effect on high pH soils, because the P is not transformed into plant-available forms under alkaline soil conditions. Aiming at the development of locally adapted solutions, we followed a Participatory Technology Development approach, making use of the local knowledge to identify current practices and associated problems by conducting focus group discussions with organic farmers. Farmers stated that they are facing challenges with a P limitation in their cotton-based production...

Influence in time and space of non-crop elements with associated functional traits on biocontrol, within the Montepaldi Long-Term Experiment, Tuscany Organic Eprints
Gaifami, Tommaso; Pacini, Gaio Cesare.
Highly intensive practices of agriculture and an irrational usage of pesticides have resulted in environmental sources exploitation and damaging of surrounding habitats. In this scenario, the role of non-crop elements such as weeds and semi-natural habitats is crucial for enhancing natural enemy abundance and therefore supporting biocontrol effect. The aim of the research was to evaluate the correlation between presence of arthropods and plant species composing non-crop elements. Biocontrol was evaluated depending on: (1) distances from field margins, (2) management of the system and (3) period of sampling. An analysis of plant, with associated functional traits, and arthropods (4) was performed to identify which plant species likely support predators....

Intellectual Property Rights, Migration, and Diaspora AgEcon
Naghavi, Alireza; Strozzi, Chiara.
In this paper we study theoretically and empirically the role of the interaction between skilled migration and intellectual property rights (IPRs) protection in determining innovation in developing countries (South). We show that although emigration from the South may directly result in the well-known concept of brain drain, it also causes a brain gain effect, the extent of which depends on the level of IPRs protection in the sending country. We argue this to come from a diaspora channel through which the knowledge acquired by emigrants abroad can flow back to the South and enhance the skills of the remaining workers there. By increasing the size of the innovation sector and the skill-intensity of emigration, IPRs protection makes it more likely for...

Investigating the selectivity of weed harrowing with new methods Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Jesper; Bibby, Bo Martin; Schou, Anders P..
In six field experiments it was investigated whether row spacing, timing, direction and orientation of post-emergence weed harrowing in spring barley influenced the selectivity and whether it is important that increasing intensities of harrowing are generated either by increasing number of passes or increasing driving speed. Selectivity was defined as the relationship between crop burial in soil immediately after treatment and weed control. To estimate crop burial, digital image analysis was used in order to make the estimations objective. The study showed that narrow row spacing decreased selectivity in a late growth stage (21) whereas row spacing in the range of 5.3 cm to 24 cm had no effects in an early growth stage (12). Harrowing across rows decreased...

Knowledge transfer in organic farming in Estonia Organic Eprints
Peetsmann, Elen; Talgre, Liina; Luik, Anne.
In order to improve the training and knowledge transfer system, the Ministry of Rural Affairs prepared a long-term programme of knowledge transfer in organic farming for the period 2016–2019. The programme, financed from the Rural Development Plan, has been implemented in cooperation with five organisations. All the programme’s activities are targeted to each part of the organic food production chain: farmers, processors, caterers and distributors.

Knowledge Transfer in the Animal Health Planning Process: Putting Research into Practice Organic Eprints
Roderick, Dr Stephen; Ellis, Dr Kathryn; Bassett, Anna.
Animal health plans are now widely accepted as a tool that can provide a structured approach to health promotion and positive welfare. This requires a partnership between farmer and veterinary advisor as well as a good knowledge of organic farming practice by animal health professionals. This paper describes an electronic compendium of information relevant to animal health and welfare in organic farming, the main aim of which is to provide resource material and a training tool for those working with organic livestock farmers. The approach involved an extensive and detailed literature search, synthesis to provide advisory material and the development of a website. The compendium is divided into species specific sub-sections covering Disease Management,...

Knowledge Transfer in the Irish Food Innovation System: Industry and Researcher Perspectives AgEcon
Kelly, Debbie; Henchion, Maeve M.; O'Reilly, Paul.
The new EU Animal Health Strategy suggests a shift in emphasis away from control towards prevention and surveillance activities for the management of threats to animal health. The optimal combination of these actions will differ among diseases and depend on largely unknown and uncertain costs and benefits. This paper reports an empirical investigation of this issue for the case of Avian Influenza. The results suggest that the optimal combination of actions will be dependent on the objective of the decision maker and that conflict exists between an optimal strategy which minimises costs to the government and one which maximises producer profits or minimises negative effects on human health. From the perspective of minimising the effects on human health,...
